App Style Guide

The design system built for The REFUGE app experience — colors, type, components, and photography direction, established through the founding-member landing page and welcome pages, the first real pieces of it built so far. This documents the product’s own design system, not a prescription for the brand overall; The REFUGE’s full marketing identity is Ella and Kennedy’s to shape.

Color

A warm paper palette, not a bright one.

Every surface on this page reads as paper, wood, and early light — never stark white, never saturated. The palette is intentionally low-contrast and quiet; forest and gold carry almost all of the emphasis.

Paper
#FAF8F2
Primary background — the site’s default canvas.
Paper, soft
#F5F2E9
Alternate section band, used to break up long pages.
Surface
#FEFDFA
Cards and raised panels — sits just above the page.
Forest
#37402C
Primary dark — headings, primary buttons, emphasis.
Gold
#AC8B57
The one accent — eyebrows, links, dividers, highlights.
Olive
#7C7A52
Secondary accent — icons, muted links, botanical marks.
Ink
#33382C
Body text — a warm near-black, never pure black.
Ink, muted
#82836E
Secondary text, captions, footer copy.
Border
#E9E4D5
Hairline dividers and card edges — always this quiet.
Typography

One serif for feeling, one sans for function.

Cormorant Garamond (italic, almost always) carries every headline and moment of warmth. Jost handles everything structural — labels, buttons, footers, and body copy at small sizes. They never trade places.

Cormorant Garamond — Headline
Welcome home.
Italic, 500 weight. Used for H1/H2 headlines and pull quotes — this page’s single most recognizable typographic move.

Is The REFUGE for you?
Same face, smaller scale — section headers throughout the site.
Jost — Eyebrow label
The Founding Season
12px, 500 weight, 0.24em letter-spacing, uppercase, gold. Sits above nearly every headline on the site.
Georgia / Times fallback — Body copy
We are so very honored and excited to welcome you into The REFUGE. This is body text — set in Georgia for email (where web fonts are unreliable) and in Jost on the website itself, always at a comfortable reading size with generous line-height.
17–18px, 1.7–1.9 line-height. Never justified past two lines without a text-align-last: left fallback.
Jost — Button label
Become a Founding Member
13px, 500 weight, 0.09em letter-spacing, uppercase — always centered, even when it wraps to two lines.
Components

The recurring pieces.

These show up, in this exact form, on every page — the landing page, both welcome pages, and the Kit email template.

Buttons
Pill-shaped, always. Forest for the primary path, gold reserved for the teacher-specific path, outline for anything secondary or on a light background.
Card
Founding Studio Membership

$75/month

Rounded corners, a soft shadow, a thin border — this is the shape every price/perks card and every welcome-page perks list uses.

Pull quote

Here at The REFUGE, we believe the practice is only half of the medicine.

A short gold rule, then italic serif — used for emphasis quotes and taglines, on both photo and plain backgrounds.
Dark callout box
What happens next

There’s nothing else you need to do.

A deep forest-to-gold gradient panel, reserved for a genuinely special moment — the Leading Edge program, next-step confirmations. Not used for routine content.

Photography

Real places, warm light, never staged.

Every photo on the site is a real, unposed moment — golden hour meadows, misty forest paths, quiet coastlines. No stock-photo gloss, no studio lighting, no smiling-at-camera stock imagery.

In the app specifically

The landing page uses photography to set a mood. Inside the app, imagery does more work than that — it should make a member feel like they’ve stepped inside an actual sanctuary made up of distinct rooms (Studio, Library, Lounge), not just scrolled past a pretty picture. Lean on real, spatial photography that gives each room its own sense of place, more immersive than what these marketing pages need.

Voice & Tone

Warm, direct, unhurried.

Write the way you’d actually speak to someone you’re glad to see — never corporate, never salesy, never over-explained.
